Namibia-Loc-Swakopmund Town

Swakopmund Town

Swakopmund is a fascinating little town with a mixture of German colonial and local architecture and cultures that sits on the Atlantic coast west of Windhoek.

The town has many galleries and historical buildings as well as a wide variety of restaurants that range from seafood to German to Italian. Activities available include golf, tennis, horse and camel riding, paragliding, parasailing, fishing, champagne cruises, dune boarding, quad biking in the dunes, bird watching and many others. There are several specialty stores such as the Karakulia Carpet Weavery, the leather tannery, Angora wool factory and an aquarium. Many street vendors and small markets sell superb African art at low prices.

In the vicinity is the seal colony at Cape Cross some one hundred and twenty kilometres due north along the coast. The seals are superb photographic models, but beware; their odour will remain in your memory for the rest of your trip! South of Swakopmund is Walvis Bay with it’s lagoons and wetlands which is home to thousands of flamingos and a wide variety of other water birds.
