Serena Amboseli
In the shadow of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, beside a copse of giant acacia trees and a gently flowing natural spring, stands Amboseli Serena Lodge. With Kilimanjaro’s nineteen thousand feet high snow-capped summit presiding over the landscape, the setting is unrivalled. All around the lodge roams the big game that has made East Africa legendary – lion, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, gazelle and wildebeest. Almost nowhere else on the continent can more elephant be seen than in Amboseli National Park.
Influenced by native Maasai architecture, the lodge is in perfect harmony with its environment. The comfortable bar and lounge area with outdoor terraces overlook the spring fed pastures in front of the hotel. Breakfast and lunch are served here buffet style. In the evening, enjoy watching an exhibition of Maasai tribal dancing before a candlelit dinner.
All guestrooms are interconnected by an open-air walkway that traverses thick tropical gardens and have large wall-sized windows looking towards Kilimanjaro or out over the waterhole. The décor uses natural materials in unusual ways to suggest the Maasai way of harmonizing with nature; cut sticks frame the bed, a Maasai Club is the door handle and hollowed out gourds are the bedside lights. Every room has an en suite bathroom.
